The article introduces the history of TWSTFT, describes the evolution of the method, its current performance and development prospects. Special attention is paid to improvements of modems` characteristics. Results of the application of methods in VNIIFTRI, calibration of channels of time comparison scales, discussion the use of modems for the work over fiber-optic communication lines are shown in the article.
