Abstract. The method of astronomical leveling is based on determining quasi-geoid undulation using the values of the components of the deflection of the vertical (DOV). Zenith cameras have the highest accuracy (error 0.1″–0.3″) and efficiency (time of measuring at a single point is no more than 1 hour) according to the definition of DOV today. They are field, relocatable and allow measurements of the components of the DOV with any given discreteness, the measurement process is fully automated. With DOV error of 0.2″, the error of determining quasi-geoid undulation is less than 1 mm at a distance of 1 km between the measurement points. The article considers the theory and error of the astronomical leveling method, compares it with other leveling methods, provides reviews of works on the use of Zenith cameras when creating models of quasi-geoid heights, and proposes the creation of a DOV polygon and quasi-geoid undulation on the ice surface of an inland water using a Zenith camera for metrological support of measurements of radio altimeters of satellite geodetic missions.
Keywords: Zenith camera, astronomical leveling, quasi-geoid undulation, deflection of vertical.
