Annotation. The Arctic is a unique region of the Planet, characterized by a low level of underwater noise and a special composition of marine mammals that use sound for their existence. However, the warming of Arctic waters over the past 40 years creates the prerequisites for the expansion of anthropogenic activities that pose a serious threat to marine life. Environmental protection measures are needed, including acoustic monitoring of Arctic waters and agreed restrictions on their use.
Key words: Arctic, climate, ice cover, icebreaker, underwater noise, Northern Sea Route.
