Abstract. Acousto-optic frequency shifters on a paratellurite crystal operating on a slow shear mode and using total internal reflection of light rays have been created and investigated. Such acousto-optic frequency shifters often provide a decrease in the RF-control power by about an order of magnitude compared to frequency shifters in the longitudinal acoustic mode. The total internal reflection of the rays in the AO cell provides an additional increase in the angle between the direct and diffracted rays. At a frequency of 40 MHz 10-degree value of the angle between the direct and diffracted rays is obtained.

Keywords: acousto-optic frequency shifter, anisotropic diffraction, total internal reflection.
