Abstract. The article is devoted to the error analysis and synthesis of the optimal geometric configuration of coordinate measuring machines (CMM). The analysis of the known provisions for determining the total error of the CMM is carried out. The problem of determining the ratio of the radii of ball-shaped probes in a known equivalent circuit of a point-to-point computer is formulated. Based on the variational optimization method, it is shown that the total error can reach a minimum when the variances of determining the radii of the probes R1 and R2 are equal. It is shown that with the identical technology of manufacturing ball-shaped probes, this condition is equivalent to the equality of the probe radii, that is, the condition R1 = R2.
