Abstract. The paper describes an acousto-optic modulator on a crystal LiBi(MoO4)2 with a central frequency of the ultrasonic transducer of 150 MHz, designed for use in fiber systems with an optical radiation wavelength of 1550 nm. The diffraction efficiency of the focused light beam with a diameter of 0.12 mm has been increased to over 80 % and the operating frequency band ofthe modulator with a width of 80 MHz has been obtained. The estimated switching time (between levels 0.1–0.9) amounts to 22 ns. The measured characteristics showed the prospects of using the LiBi(MoO4)2 crystal to create acousto-optic modulators operating at frequencies up to several hundred MHz.

Keywords: acousto-optic modulator, crystal LiBi(MoO4)2, fiber systems, switching time.
