Abstract. The possibility of laser ultrasonic measurement of ultrasonic group velocity of millimeter size samples is demonstrated. One-side access to the object surface with thin liquid layer is realized. Several solid samples — glass, metal, ceramic — with the thickness of 3–10 mm were tested. It was stated, that laser excited submicrosecond ultrasonic pulses and extra wide-band piezoelectric detection provide relative 0.1 % accuracy of ultrasonic wave velocity measurement. The technology provides precise measurement over wide range of ultrasonic wave velocity.
