Annotation. The historical aspects of the development of measurements of the frequency deviation of a frequency-modulated (FM) signal are considered, the need for a centralized transmission of the unit is substantiated. The procedure for transferring the unit of frequency deviation from the primary standard through working standards to working measuring instruments is indicated. The features of the transmission of the unit of deviation in a wide frequency range and the relationship with other types of measurements are shown. The principle of operation and characteristics of the improved primary standard of the unit of frequency deviation are described. Attention is paid to analog and digital methods of synthesis and analysis of the FM signal.

Key words: frequency modulation, frequency deviation, signal generators, calibrators, receiver, spectrum analyzers, radio testers, standards.
