Abstract

Light beam transmittances were measured in paratellurite (TeO2) single crystals from Russian manufacturers for the spectral range of cold atom frequency standards (400–1000 nm). Oblique incidence of the light beams was used to avoid beam overlap and interference at the photodetector. A technique for monitoring and correcting photodetector nonlinearity during transmittance measurements was proposed and applied. Light attenuation (extinction) coefficients were calculated from the transmittances. The results for different crystals are similar and depend weakly on light polarization. In the studied spectral range, the Rayleigh scattering coefficient is either smaller than the absorption coefficient, or their values are comparable.
